Apprenticeship Forum reveals career pathways and future opportunities

A great partnership initiative has resulted in a successful IELLEN-led forum on Apprenticeships.

This partnership brought together the IELLEN with the Victorian Employer Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI), as well as four Apprenticeship providers: Holmesglen Institute of TAFE, Air Conditioning & Mechanical Contractors Association (AMCA); William Angliss Institute of TAFE, and the Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce (VACC).

The free forum, held Tuesday 18 June, attracted an audience of over 40 parents, students and teachers.

Held at De La Salle College in Malvern, a clearly engaged crowd heard from a range of speakers. Gill Meek, IELLEN CEO, provided opening comments and introduced Alex Parratt from VECCI who gave a succinct overview of the Apprenticeship system. After a Q&A segment, representatives from two TAFE Institutes, AMCA and VACC touched on diverse occupational/industry areas. These included areas such as hospitality and specific occupations: drafting, plumbing, air conditioning, and automotive mechanics. Everyone who attended also received a show bag of printed materials from providers.

Senior IELLEN Partnership Broker, Andrew Neophytou, said "Forums of this kind are valuable, if not vital. They provide an opportunity to impart up to date, practical information about career pathways and future opportunities to those who need it most. These forums provide an opportunity for a range of questions to be asked, and answered. In the era of Google, there is still a real need for public forums of this kind."

Evaluations of the night showed that attendees learned more about apprenticeships and everyone rated the forum as "good" or 'great." This event follows various partnership initiatives of the IELLEN held over the last two years which have targeted parents. These initiatives have included five parent "transition" sessions in 2012 and a major secondary pathways event. Together with this most recent forum these events have attracted in excess of two hundred people.
