DEA Conference features workshop on Ticket to Work

Disability Employment Australia (DEA) is the peak industry body for Australia's Disability Employment Service (DES) providers. Their annual conference provides an opportunity for attendees to think, question and respond to a range of critical issues in ways that are meaningful to their organisations, people with disability, employers and industry. The 2013 conference was held in Adelaide and over 440 delegates attended, entertained as always by MC extraordinaire, Brett de Hoedt.

Inner Eastern LLEN, Project Officer Louise Nicholas attended the conference as part of a team who co-presented a workshop on "Ticket to Work - a National Australian School-based Apprenticeship" that increases employability options for students with disability during their final years of schooling.

The team presenting the workshop comprised of Louise Nicholas (IELLEN), Fiona Waugh (BGK LLEN), Samantha Pine (Marriot Employment Options) and Margo Brain (JobSupply Personnel, Prahran Mission UnitingCare).

Attendees were predominately DES providers, already aware that students with disability struggle to successfully transition from school to employment, putting them at significant risk of poverty and social exclusion. They were keen to learn how Ticket to Work breaks down barriers with students, parents and employers resulting in positive student transitions. Underpinned by a stakeholder partnership, the program is a transferrable model that can be adapted to local needs. The team was pleased to receive interest from delegates requesting further information on how it could work in their local areas.

A National Ticket to Work Network has been established to support implementation of this partnership-driven approach across Australia and further information is available from Louise Nicholas at the IELLEN.
